Who we are

Volunteen connects teens and organizations for volunteer opportunities.

Founded by Lucy Sandor, a high school Freshman in NJ, Volunteen seeks to expand the opportunity for middle and high school teens to find service opportunities across the state.

The goal of volunteen is to create a website and app helping students to connect with local organizations and charities willing to take on young volunteers.

Lucy has been volunteering with different organizations outside of her local community for more than 3 years. Lucy has constantly looked for opportunities to bring these organizations closer to her own school through drives and promotions of different events.

“Volunteering has been more an enjoyable experience for me rather than something like a chore, especially when I have helped with younger kids, or gotten directly involved. Whenever I reached out to my local community, everyone seemed very eager to help, and always pitched in.”

However, Lucy has found that many of her peers struggle to find opportunities to volunteer outside of school organized events.

“I feel bad when through the school, the only thing for kids to do is drop off donations, and they don’t get community interactions. Getting that community experience feels a lot more fulfilling, but it’s hard for kids to find these organizations by themselves.”

Due to her time and efforts Lucy has found d out about many different organizations with all different types of jobs that required volunteers to help out. So Lucy and her team wanted to help of other students who may not have people that can guide them, or any time to do so.

Why Volunteen?

Young people want to help—but feel lost, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin.

We surveyed a representative group of 36 local 8th graders about why they aren't more involved in community service. Their answers were striking:

  • 50% said:

"I don’t know where to start."

  • 94% said:

"I’m too busy to even find opportunities."

  • 19% said:

"I’m not confident—I don’t know what skills I have that could help."

These responses tell a clear story: middle schoolers are interested—but they need guidance, access, and encouragement.
